Description: This is a historically significant pair of Antique Old 1920s Native American Indian Chief Portrait Oil Paintings (2), by noted early California Western artist and portrait painter, Les Coles. I could not find much biographical information on this talented artist, but perhaps you know more about them or their work? These two pieces depicts Plains Indian chiefs wearing full regalia, stoically looking away from the viewer's gaze. They both wear eagle feather headdresses, colorful trade beads, and cowhide shirts. I could not identify the subjects depicted, and they may be historical Native American figures of some importance. Perhaps you recognize them? Each painting is signed: "Les Coles" in the lower right corner. The painting on the left is approximately 20 x 25 inches, and the painting on the right is approximately 18 1/4 x 26 inches. These artworks likely date to the 1920's - 1930's. Photo 24 depicts a label on the verso of the only other publicly known painting by Les Coles to be offered for sale (not mine,) which indicates that the artist once displayed his works at the Santa Cruz City Museum in California. Good - Fair overall condition for nearly a century of age and storage. The painting on the left has moderate scuffing, paint loss, edge fraying and wear. The painting on the right has edge fraying, a few light scratches, yellowing and several small tears. Please see all photos carefully to discern the condition of these items. These are priced so cheaply due to the restoration costs that might be involved in bringing them back to their former glory. Acquired from an old estate collection in Los Angeles County, California. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer. Please check out my other listings for more wonderful and unique artworks!
