For a regular bed this rail fits underneath the mattress (or between the mattress & box spring) and is secured by straps. The height of the hand rain is adjustable as is the length of the support railing (under the mattress). This makes it easy to match the needs of the bed and its owner. Note that this rail structure may not work well with extra-thick mattresses as it seems to be made for folks with an 6 to 10 inch mattress, give or take. This is not explicitly said but from the seller's own experience. No tools needed to put this together and once set up it adds stability and ease for getting in and out of bed.
