A member of the Euphorbiaceae family, the drought-resistant plant works equally well as a xeriscaping option or as a houseplant. The plant also has potential as a renewable fuel source. DescriptionDevil’s backbone boasts a stem that “zigzags” at about 1-inch intervals, with leaves alternating on each side of the nodes. The leaves of the variegated plant include white, cream, greens, pink and red colors, while the shoe-shaped flower clusters may be red or yellow. The plant, a subtropical succulent, grows to about 2 to 3 feet in both height and width as a houseplant, although it may reach 6 feet outdoors.RequirementsVariegated devil’s backbone grows well in well-drained soil of nearly any texture when planted outdoors. Plant your indoor slipper plant in an all-purpose potting soil mixed with coarse sand, with a 6.1 to 7.8 pH level, for optimal results. Keep the soil barely moist from tepid water, and protect your plant from temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The plant will perform best in Sunset Zones H1, H2, 22, 23 and 24. To avoid the necessity of using chemical fungicides, keep the plant in only slightly moist soil, watering in the early morning to allow the soil to dry out before experiencing cooler night temperatures. Avoid crowding the plants, so there is good air circulation around them. Immediately remove any infected foliage to prevent spread of the fungus.Mealy bugs are also a common problem for devil’s backbone. Tiny off-white bugs with flat oval bodies, you may spot them most easily by the cottony clusters of eggs they leave on the underside of the leaves and at the connection of leaf and stem. Place the pots in a tray with about an inch of water in it, and place them where they receive indirect sunlight. In a week to 10 days, when tugging on the cuttings lightly meets with a resistance from the new roots, transfer them to a potting soil and coarse sand blend
