Description: Nice antique 18th century (C 1650) Spanish baluster turned candlestick / candle holder made out of brass or bronze. The base is square and sits on 4 short feet; its top is a modified dome shape with nice turned rings. The detailed baluster stem was attached to the base by means of hand-cut threads. There are nice turning lines along the length of the stem though many of these have worn away with handling and polishing. This candlestick was originally cast in 2 parts, and it sits flat and straight; no damage or repair. But the threads are worn with use and the stem sits loosely in base so I added a thin bit of cloth to tighten it up, which works great without doing nasty soldering as was often done to firm these up. Great and even patina from age. See Michaelis' Old Domestic Base-Metal Candlestick, page 103, for his discussion of this candlestick and where he assigns a date to it of confidently the first half of the 18th century.
