Description: PETRIFIED WOOD SLAB CHINCHILLA AUSTRALIA 180 X 120 X 13 MM 445 G From ancient Greek meaning "wood turned into rock", Petrified Wood is a form of fossilization where all the organic matter combines with minerals (usually a silicate, such as quartz) during a process called per-mineralization. In order for wood to become petrified it must be completely covered by sediment, thereby depriving the wood of oxygen. Simultaneously, there must be a mineral rich water source close by. Over time, the water delivers the minerals into the cellular structure of the wood, replacing (and in most cases), combining with the organic material, cell by cell, until the wood is transformed into stone. Wood petrification is unusual in this way. If acid was used to dissolve into the stone, one would actually still find organic material. In regard to petrified wood colourisation, each specimen is dependent upon other minerals present in the locality at the time of fossilisation. Streaks of warm browns and reds are indicative of iron oxides intermixing with quartz and other minerals during a specimen's fossilisation process. This petrified wood slab with dramatic red, yellow and brown hues and tree characteristics originates from area of Chinchilla, Queensland, Australia. The slab reminds an abstract painting drawn by the Earth around 150 myo, during Jurassic period. The slab measures approx. 180 x 120 mm at widest points with thickness of 13 mm, and weighs 445 g. The specimen is semi polished, and can serve as a focal point or become a material for a dozen bright cabochons. The images were taken outdoor and indoor in various light conditions.Combined postage is offered.Flat Rate postage of A$9.80 within Australia.
