Description: Being offered is a vintage, Papago Indian hand woven basket wall plaque plate. The tribe is located in Arizona. This basket is crafted from yucca, devil’s claw, and bear grass as the foundation, with a chord of willow around the edges. The basket has an age-related patina or discoloration to the straw. This is not unusual from exposure to light over the decades. There is dust in places. The basket shows typical age and wearing. There is the appearance of soiling which is from dust and could use a washing. The basket plaque is approx. 8 1/4" wide. Insurance is included in the price of S & H. The Tohono O’odham, as they are known today, or “Papago” people as they were called by the Spanish, live in the Sonoran desert country of southwest Arizona. The ancient name they called themselves was “Tohono Aw-aw-tam”, or the Desert People. Tohono O'odham means "Desert People". The federally recognized tribe is known as the Tohono O'odham Nation. The Tohono O'odham tribal government and most of the people have rejected the historical name Papago, that was used by Europeans after being adopted by Spanish conquistadores and later by English speaking people.
