Description: this is a wonderful antique oil on canvas painting that was done c.1915 in a realistic & somewhat naive style - the unknown artist was quite talented but probably not formally schooled in fine art & most probably learned to paint from another talented & established artist - with this painting, the artist created what appears to be an early fall season on a beautiful calm day where the lake's surface is absolutely still & placid - on the left of the painting, the viewer sees a large stand of trees to include a number of beautiful white birches that stand prominently in the foreground - much of the tree foliage on the left has turned to a red-orange color suggesting fall season in New England - on the right side, the viewer sees a jumble of boulders with some pine trees standing in between some of the boulders - it is a rough-hewn landscape with no sign of human intervention - in the center of the painting the viewer sees two mid-sized mountains off in the distance on the far side of the lake - the artist has done a decent job in creating a sense of distance & space especially between the far side of the lake & the second mountain using an impressionistic style to depict its further location from the lake- the first mountain is more defined & realistic as the artist was depicting it as being much closer to the mid-section of the lake - in total, this is a very pleasant depiction of a serene White Mountain School scene with its "upcountry" lake & mountains painted by a talented artist who wished to capture the untouched natural beauty of this bucolic scene - the painting itself measures a generous 30" x 17", & is in very good antique condition with no inpainting or repairs - the painting is greatly enhanced by its original gilded gesso on wooden frame which measures 36" x 23" - the frame is also in very good antique condition - this painting can be picked up at my home in Swanzey, NH to save on shipping costs
