This is NOT a book-club book. This is NOT an ex-library book. Buyer beware: There were many later printings of THE EXORCIST that were published in this exact hardcover format and also in similar, but slightly different, formats. There was also a hardcover book club edition that resembles the trade edition. This is the real deal: the true 1st edition, 1st printing, in the correct 1st state dust jacket. He attended Brooklyn Preparatory, a Jesuit school, on scholarship at a time when Joe Paterno was the football team’s quarterback. He graduated as class valedictorian in 1946. He graduated from Georgetown University and went on to get his master’s degree in English Literature from The George Washington University. His thesis was “T.S. Eliot’s Shakespearean Criticisms.” He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he became head of the Policy Branch of the Psychological Warfare Division. His Air Force experience was part of his autobiography, WHICH WAY TO MECCA, JACK? To promote WHICH WAY TO MECCA, JACK?, Blatty was a contestant on the Groucho Marx quiz show “You Best Your Life,” winning $10,000, and that was enough to enable him to quit his job and write full time. In 1959, Blatty ghost-wrote “Dear Abby’s” (Abigail Van Buren’s) bestselling book DEAR TEENAGER, for which she was praised for her “matronly wit and wisdom.” During the 1960’s William Peter Blatty began his collaboration with director Blake Edwards, writing scripts for comedy films such as “A Shot In The Dark” (1964), “What Did You Do In The War, Daddy?” (1966), “Gunn” (1967), and “Darling Lili” (1970), a musical starring Julie Andrews and Rock Hudson. He was also involved in the screenplays for the films “The Man From The Diner’s Club” (1963), “Promise Her Anything” (1965), and “The Great Bank Robbery” (1969). Blatty published THE EXORCIST in 1971, garnering excellent reviews. In 1978, Blatty adapted his novel TWINKLE, TWINKLE, “KILLER” KANE! into the retitled THE NINTH CONFIGURATION. In 1980 Blatty wrote, directed, and produced a film version entitled “The Ninth Configuration”, which was a critical success, but was a commercial flop. It has since acquired a cult following. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A VERY GOOD+ to NEAR FINE book in an outwardly VERY GOOD to VERY GOOD+ dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its burgundy quarter-cloth and burgundy boards binding with gilt lettering on the spine of the book. The book has the correct tan colored endpapers. There is no writing in the book; no bookplates; no remainder marks. There is no spine lean to the book, which is unusual. Due to the way copies of THE EXORCIST were produced, the book usually shows up with a spine lean and sometimes a severe spine lean. The lettering on the spine of book shows a touch of rubbing; basically unobtrusive. There is a hint of rubbing at the corners of thee book, but less than is usually encountered. The dust jacket is not price-clipped and shows the correct 1st issue price of $6.95 with the correct 1st issue photograph of William Peter Blatty with a coffee cup in his right hand. There are no chips or tears to the dust jacket. The dust jacket has undergone a small amount of color touch-up, mainly at the head and heel of the spine panel on both the reverse side of the dust jacket and on the outside of the dust jacket. There is some slight wrinkling at the upper edge of the spine panel of the dust jacket; largely unobtrusive. This is a much nicer and collectible copy of THE EXORCIST than is usually encountered. Usually this book shows up spine-leaned, well-read, worn and torn in a dust jacket (if there is a dust jacket) that is worn and torn and rubbed and chipped. This is a nice and much better than average copy of this book and dust jacket; not perfect, but a nice copy. Buyer beware: there are a number of copies of THE EXORCIST currently listed on EBAY as 1st editions that are not 1st editions; this is a correct 1st edition, 1st printing of THE EXORCIST. The great and famous dust jacket design by Frederick Cantor. There is a wonderful full-page contemporary photograph of William Peter Blatty holding a coffee cup on the rear panel of the dust jacket.
